Waiting for a Parcel? Beware of Fake Delivery Messages
Partilhar
Waiting for a parcel? So are cybercriminals.
Fake delivery notifications have become a common way for scammers to catch people off guard. The message may claim that your parcel could not be delivered, that you need to pay a small delivery fee, or that you need to confirm your address.
Because many of us regularly order products online, these messages can look completely believable.
Cybercriminals may impersonate courier companies, retailers or even your bank and send the message by SMS or WhatsApp.
What could happen if you click?
A fraudulent link could lead to:
stolen banking or login credentials;
identity theft;
malware being installed on your device;
fraudulent transactions; or
other financial losses.
Sometimes the fake website looks almost identical to the legitimate courier's website, which makes these scams particularly dangerous.
This week's Cyber Tip
Never click a link in an unexpected delivery SMS or WhatsApp message.
Instead:
visit the courier company's official website yourself;
use the retailer or courier's official app to track your parcel;
check your original order confirmation for tracking information; and
if you are unsure, contact the company directly before clicking anything.
A sense of urgency is one of the tactics scammers use most effectively. A message saying “Your parcel will be returned today” does not mean you need to act immediately.
